Three different trumpets, three different pieces

Part of my lessons with Yoram Levy in my first year at ANAM was spent exploring the plethora of sounds I could make on the various trumpets to which I had access. As a part of my early training, Yoram had instructed me to learn a number of concerti on different instruments: the trumpet concerto by Richard Mills on B-flat piston trumpet, Trumpet concerto by Georg Phillip Telemann on piccolo trumpet, Trumpet concerto by Oskar Bohme (on a borrowed B-flat rotary trumpet), and the horn concerto by Johann Neruda on my E-flat trumpet. This was of course a supplementary focus of my studies, with my primary goals centred upon orchestral playing as a classical trumpeter at ANAM. I had noticed that frequently in orchestras, they would use what are called rotary trumpets, primarily made in Germany (as is their native origin). They are used particularly often by Orchestra Victoria, whom I've had the pleasure and privilege to work with on several occasions.

In 2022, I played a short sonata for Trumpet and Oboe by Gottfried Finger, as well as the Telemann Horn Concerto on an instrument called the ‘Corno De Caccia’, and the Charles Chaynes Trumpet Concerto. The recital was recorded and sent to my dad, Timothy Corkeron, Principal Timpanist of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. There must have been something he enjoyed in that recording, because after hearing it, he called me to say he would find me a rotary trumpet of my own.

Lo and behold, several months later after having secured advice, delivery, and testing from Timothy Francis (Associate Principal Trumpet Orchestra Victoria), two hand-made Ricco Kuhn rotaries were within my grasp – all the way from Germany. I've had them in close possession ever since and one of them is featured in my final ANAM recital.

Continuing on the tradition and challenge I set for myself since commencing at ANAM, I thought it fitting to use three different trumpets, for three different pieces, in my final recital at ANAM. I will use an (A) Schilke piccolo trumpet for the Telemann trumpet concerto with continuo and harpsicord, B-flat Kuhn rotary trumpet for the Bohme trumpet concerto, and my Bach C trumpet for the Mills trumpet concerto.

I look forward to sharing the sound of these beautiful instruments with this corner of the world as I round off my experience at ANAM.
