Harmonies Du Soir. A festival of French chamber music. A beautiful way to bring the year together.
This concert moves through three symbolic landmarks of French culture. Versailles captures the splendour of the 17th-century court, where Jean-Baptiste Lully tailored the sound of royal ceremony.
Notre-Dame stands for the rich sacred and secular traditions of the French Baroque, heard in Élisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre’s graceful Trio Sonata, Jean-Marie Leclair’s lyrical Trio Sonata Op. 2 No. 8 and François Couperin’s finely crafted Pièces de clavecin.
The journey then jumps to Pompidou, a modern Paris of bold lines and new sounds. Thierry Escaich’s Magic Circus bursts with rhythmic vitality, while Clara Maïda’s …das spinnt… threads electronics and acoustic colour into something unmistakably of today.
