ANAM Recital: Tom Allen

As a musician’s instrumental proficiency develops, so too does their artistic taste and temperament. Each ANAM musician’s recital is a snapshot in time – simultaneously summarising their year of training and revealing glimpses of their future selves. What music excites them? What do they want to communicate? How does their art help them understand the world better? Hear what the next generation of virtuosi have to say, and how, in the 2025 ANAM Recital series.

Song of a New World
"This recital is an opportunity to present some of my favourite music for horn. While we're often grouped with winds and brass, some of the horn's greatest qualities come through when paired with strings and piano.

Mozart's horn quintet is a staple of the horn repertoire and to me is Mozart at the height of his horn writing powers. Full of joyful melodies and quiet virtuosity, it is a piece I've been eager to perform since I first began playing horn.

Mainframe Tropics is yet to find its way into mainstream programming, but is a captivating continuation of the Horn Trio, a formation made popular by Brahms and later, Ligeti. I first heard the piece on Sarah Willis' Album, Horn Discoveries, and it's been stuck in my head since." — Tom Allen
