As a musician’s instrumental proficiency develops, so too does their artistic taste and temperament. Each ANAM musician’s recital is a snapshot in time – simultaneously summarising their year of training and revealing glimpses of their future selves. What music excites them? What do they want to communicate? How does their art help them understand the world better? Hear what the next generation of virtuosi have to say, and how, in the 2025 ANAM Recital series.
In 2025 the ANAM Set is back. Musicians in their 3rd year of training present a specially commissioned work as part of their recital program.
I Love Colours
"These are all works that spark my imagination with how colourful they are!
The Saariaho Calices is inspired by the protective layer around the bud of a flower. There are many textures that make me think about things like sticks scratching the flower’s surface or bugs trying to get in. There are also sweeter melodies that bring to mind the kind of love that is behind the protection of the flower.
The Franklin is all about exploring and stretching the kinds of sounds possible on the violin (to give you an idea, I am playing my violin with a honey stick at points!). There are some very groovy bits too.
Prokofiev’s first Violin Concerto is one of my favourites, it feels magical. There are so many strong characters in it, some are bombastic and crazy and some are ethereal and flying away.
I’m obsessed with finding out about how the different elements of the music come together to create such potent effects." — Sola Hughes
