ANAM Recital: Olivia Kowalik

As a musician’s instrumental proficiency develops, so too does their artistic taste and temperament. Each ANAM musician’s recital is a snapshot in time – simultaneously summarising their year of training and revealing glimpses of their future selves. What music excites them? What do they want to communicate? How does their art help them understand the world better? Hear what the next generation of virtuosi have to say, and how, in the 2025 ANAM Recital series.

Fluttering Sounds

"Arvo Pärt’s Fratres is no doubt a piece that has always fascinated me. The fluttering of the bow at the beginning develops into percussive shimmers over a blanket of somber chords.

This fluttering is also present in the famous Chaconne from Bach’s 2nd Partita in D minor. Unpicking the genius of his writing has been the most rewarding experience from learning this piece, despite its many technical challenges!

And finally I couldn’t think of a better way than ending my program with Elgar’s glorious Violin Sonata. This is a stunning work, empowered by its emotive drive and gorgeous 20th century soundscape.

I hope I get to make your heart flutter through these three beautiful pieces for the violin." — Olivia Kowalik
