As a musician’s instrumental proficiency develops, so too does their artistic taste and temperament. Each ANAM musician’s recital is a snapshot in time – simultaneously summarising their year of training and revealing glimpses of their future selves. What music excites them? What do they want to communicate? How does their art help them understand the world better? Hear what the next generation of virtuosi have to say, and how, in the 2025 ANAM Recital series.
Joy on the double bass: baroque, classical, romantic
"This program presents an evolving journey of some sunny and positive works showcasing the voice of the solo double bass. The first work in the program is Vanhal’s Double bass concerto, a wholesome introduction to the bass as a solo instrument if you’ve never heard it before, with its up-beat energy and virtuosic fireworks.
Bach’s First cello suite arranged for the bass develops the musical possibilities of the instrument, showcasing the baroque ideals and a more intimate depiction of the bass. The suites loom large over double bassists everywhere as one of our only sources of solo repertoire from Bach. They are a significant technical challenge to reproduce at cello pitch on the bass, but have been such a joy to work on and delve into.
Schumann’s Adagio and Allegro originally written for horn and piano is a soaring and deeply personal conclusion to the recital.
I hope you enjoy this afternoon of cheerful double bass music-making." — Maddison Furlan
