As a musician’s instrumental proficiency develops, so too does their artistic taste and temperament. Each ANAM musician’s recital is a snapshot in time – simultaneously summarising their year of training and revealing glimpses of their future selves. What music excites them? What do they want to communicate? How does their art help them understand the world better? Hear what the next generation of virtuosi have to say, and how, in the 2025 ANAM Recital series.
In 2025 the ANAM Set is back. Musicians in their 3rd year of training present a specially commissioned work as part of their recital program.
Of Poets and Philosophers
"Throughout history, many of the world’s great writers have drawn inspiration from music—think Tolstoy’s Kreutzer Sonata or Murakami’s Norwegian Wood. But what is it that draws composers toward the written word? In this program for cello and piano, we explore the ideas of some of music’s great thinkers.
Working from the desire to perform Schumann’s great cello concerto, I wanted to create a program that presented that work from a slightly different perspective. In addition to being a composer, Schumann was a very influential writer. I feel that his music is often misunderstood when placed next to other Romantics like Brahms or Mendelssohn, but there is such a strong resonance with the literary world, aligning with writings such as those of E.T.A Hoffmann. I hope in this recital we will discover together new dimensions to these amazing works." — Jack Overall
