As a musician’s instrumental proficiency develops, so too does their artistic taste and temperament. Each ANAM musician’s recital is a snapshot in time – simultaneously summarising their year of training and revealing glimpses of their future selves. What music excites them? What do they want to communicate? How does their art help them understand the world better? Hear what the next generation of virtuosi have to say, and how, in the 2025 ANAM Recital series.
Bonjour, Buenos Aires!
"Music, a medium that holds extraordinary power. It’s a universal language that everyone, no matter what culture or country you’re from, can relate to. It's what strangers have in common. Music has the power to bring people together - it brings the power of connection. As hinted in the title, my recital explores both French and Argentinian percussion repertoire. A connection between countries on the complete opposite side of the world, with extremely different cultures and languages, yet here in Australia, I’m doing a percussion recital connecting both. Opening with French composer Sejourne and his beautiful marimba concerto, I will play the first 2 movements with pianist Louisa Breen. Following that, my percussion colleagues at ANAM will join me to play Zivkovich’s Trio Per Uno, a trio for 3 players around a bass drum that explores the connection between each performer through unisons, improvs and solos. Following this, we head to Argentina, where the recital takes an emotional turn exploring grief, with Golijov's Mariel (with fellow ANAM colleague, Boudewijn Keenan on cello). To end the recital, I’m finishing with a piece very special to me, Argentinian composer Astor Piazzolla's Libertango. Only this time, I've written music for a small string orchestra, who will join me! Not often do percussionists get to play with string orchestras, so I thought there was no better place to explore this connection than my own recital! I look forward to having you in the audience!" — Caleb Goldsmith
