From Beethoven to Brubeck

Continuing the exploration of the two piano repertoire on the amazing Stewart and Sons concert grand pianos at Beleura House and Garden, this concert opens by celebrating Beethoven’s legacy, this year marking the great composers 250th anniversary. Inspired by the 1787 play of the same name by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Beethoven’s Egmont Overture op. 84 builds to a thrilling conclusion. Beethoven is reported to have said, “Goethe’s poems exert a great power over me not only by virtue of their content but also their rhythm; I am put in the right mood and stimulated to compose by this language...”

Dave Brubeck’s Points on Jazz is a ballet suite which was composed for two pianos as a set of rhythmic variations on a theme. Some of the variations are based on jazz concepts, Blues, Rag etc.. others are derived from the classics like the Waltz, Prelude, Chorale and Fugue.

To conclude the program is the fun packed arrangement of Bizet’s Carmen Fantasie by Mack Wilberg for 8 hands at two pianos.
