ANAM Recital: Francis Atkins

As a musician’s instrumental proficiency develops, so too does their artistic taste and temperament. Each ANAM musician’s recital is a snapshot in time – simultaneously summarising their year of training and revealing glimpses of their future selves. What music excites them? What do they want to communicate? How does their art help them understand the world better? Hear what the next generation of virtuosi have to say, and how, in the 2026 ANAM Recital series.

Dancing with the Devil
"This recital pairs two of the most epic and exciting works ever written for the piano. Franz Liszt's Sonata in B Minor, S. 178 is a single-movement, thirty-minute-long marathon that asks the absolute extremes of the musician, both technically and musically. Be it an autobiographical narrative of Liszt's life, or a recount of Goethe's Faust, one certainly needs to sell their soul to the Devil to make it through this work unscathed.

And for something completely different, Carl Vine's Sonata No. 1 is a rhythmically-charged, high energy, techno-esque piece, and is one of the most significant works for the piano since Elliott Carter's Sonata (1946), commissioned by the Sydney Dance Company. To give an idea of the nature of this piece, its first performances featured Michael Kieran Harvey at the piano, swinging lights on chains, and the entire dance ensemble clad head-to-toe in silver lycra, like a legion of Robo-Cops!

Preparation for this recital has been a very special process. I often find myself overwhelmed by how incredible these two sonatas are, and sit on my piano bench, smiling to myself. This recital will be thrilling for both my audience and myself!" — Francis Atkins
