About the composer:
Jessie Leov is an award-winning composer of New Zealand and Australian heritage.
Drawing on eclectic influences, Jessie’s music brings together both familiar and experimental sounds. With a diverse practice as a music-maker, Jessie’s work traverses classical and popular music, including cross-disciplinary collaboration across the arts. Her music reflects a deep curiosity about the world around her; exploring nature, personal experience, as well as responding to other art forms such as poetry and visual art.
In 2024 Jessie was one of four early-career composers selected to attend the Edward T. Cone Composition Institute at Princeton University, where she worked with composer Steven Mackey and had an orchestral work performed by the New Jersey Symphony. She is the recipient of an 2022 APRA Professional Development Award and in 2023 held the position of Composer-in-Residence for the NZSO National Youth Orchestra.
A composer fellow at the 2025 Bang on a Can Summer Music Festival at Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA), Jessie also undertook a four-week artist fellowship at the Willapa Bay Artist-in-Residence program in Washington, USA in 2025. 2026 will see her write new works for Sydney-based Omega Ensemble as part of the CoLAB: Composer Accelerator Program, and the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra as a participant in the TSO Australian Composers School.
Jessie’s collaborative album, Earthworks, with sonic artist Garling Wu, exploring their shared connection with the natural world and the growing urgency of climate change, is also due for release in early 2026. This project brings together their respective backgrounds in contemporary classical and sonic arts as well as exploring wider musical influences. Their work, “Sounding Bell”, premiered in London in 2024 and was showcased at the 2025 MANIFEST:IO Symposium for New Media and Electronic Art in Berlin.
Jessie holds a Master of Music in Composition from the University of Auckland, where she was awarded the Douglas Mews Composition Prize.
