As a musician’s instrumental proficiency develops, so too does their artistic taste and temperament. Each ANAM musician’s recital is a snapshot in time – simultaneously summarising their year of training and revealing glimpses of their future selves. What music excites them? What do they want to communicate? How does their art help them understand the world better? Hear what the next generation of virtuosi have to say, and how, in the 2026 ANAM Recital series.
An Archaeological Expedition
"This recital takes us on a journey through the history of the double bass repertoire. It retraces the
footsteps of influence and inspiration that connect the works across different eras.
The performance opens with Alfred Desenclos's Aria, a rarely performed work that I look forward to brushing the dust off for ANAM audiences. Hans Fryba’s Suite im Alten Stil and Carl Ditters von Dittersdorf’s Concerto in E major are cornerstones of the double bass canon; behind each piece lies a rich history, revealing connections to celebrated musicians, composers, and musical traditions.
Richard Strauss's orchestral writing was regarded as "unplayable" by double bassists in the early twentieth century, owing to a level of virtuosity and technical difficulty that was unprecedented at the time. Franz
Hasenöhrl’s arrangement of Strauss’s tone poem Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche captures this orchestral monument in miniature. Scored for double bass and four other instruments, it showcases the bass centre stage while capturing the wit, energy, and mischievous spirit of the original." — Maddison Furlan
