ANAM Set 2025: The Next Chapter of Music – Collaborations Premiere

ANAM launches the first performances of the ANAM Set 2025. The project sees a total of 18 commissioned works by Australian and New Zealand composers performed across the year as part of the ANAM Recital Series, with six of these new works premiered in June. Each piece has been created for and in partnership with ANAM’s third-year musicians highlighting the projects collaborative imperative.

“The ANAM Set is a source of continuous inspiration to us. Its production of new solo compositions to each of the instruments studied at ANAM keeps our musicians wired to the latest trends and brings to their awareness the new voices of Australian music. The works that the composers feel they need to pen right here right now will in time become a recording of a soundscape of this era, but until we are there, the tasks of commissioning, composing, rehearsing, and performing these works keep us focused on exactly what the arts should be doing,” – ANAM Artistic Director Paavali Jumppanen.

Made possible through the generous support of theAnthony and Sharon Lee Foundation, the ANAM Set 2025 marks the latest chapter in this ambitious commissioning project, which has brought more than 100 new works to life since its inception in 2021. All past seasons have been professionally recorded by ABC Classic – with plans to do the same in 2025 – and are broadcast regularly around the country, or available to listen to online at any time.

What's On

Composer Ian Munro: “It's been a pleasure writing for Jack [Overall]. The research for and drafting of the piece are done and now the rehearsals will begin, with the rather unusual interpolation of texts by Japanese poet Basho for speaking players. I thank ANAM for the opportunity to be part of such an innovative set, offering a chance to explore a different way of writing and to contribute to a venture that has become an important ongoing musical project in Melbourne.”

ANAM musician Mattea Osenk: “I feel incredibly privileged to be given the opportunity to collaborate with a living composer to help create new music and perform it! I love combining music with other art forms, including poetry and visual art, and I love to sing with my instrument too. Jane [Sheldon] was so generous and considerate to include this when composing ‘Talking to herself alone’, and her piece perfectly combines her incredible writing with the elements of music that keep my love for it alive.”

Composer Jane Sheldon: “The ANAM set has only been going for a few short years but has already produced a vast amount of new repertoire. I'm delighted to contribute ‘Talking with herself alone’to that body of work. I loved creating this piece for Mattea [Osenk]. As a singer/composer it was an unexpected surprise that she was so interested in vocalising while playing. I'm grateful to her for her openness of spirit and can't wait to hear her performance.”
