ANAM Recital: Theonie Wang

As a musician’s instrumental proficiency develops, so too does their artistic taste and temperament. Each ANAM musician’s recital is a snapshot in time – simultaneously summarising their year of training and revealing glimpses of their future selves. What music excites them? What do they want to communicate? How does their art help them understand the world better? Hear what the next generation of virtuosi have to say, and how, in the 2026 ANAM Recital series.

Beau Soir
"For my final recital at ANAM, I wanted to share a program that reflects both my own roots and the roots of classical music. It is centred on French music, as both of my parents studied and met in Paris, making this recital especially personal to me.

The program is a bit of a "French sandwich", with Bach in the centre, framed by works of Ysaÿe, Saint-Saëns and Ravel. Although Bach is the only non-French composer, his influence is woven throughout the recital, particularly in Ysaÿe's homage to Bach's solo violin writing.

Dance also threads its way throughout the program, from the Baroque dance forms of Bach and Ysaÿe, to the sway of Saint-Saëns Havanaise and the jazz influences in Ravel's Violin Sonata. Together, these works showcase the violin's many voices: from Bach's illusion of polyphony, to Ysaÿe's virtuosity, Saint-Saëns' lyricism and Ravel's rich palette of colour." — Theonie Wang
