As a musician’s instrumental proficiency develops, so too does their artistic taste and temperament. Each ANAM musician’s recital is a snapshot in time – simultaneously summarising their year of training and revealing glimpses of their future selves. What music excites them? What do they want to communicate? How does their art help them understand the world better? Hear what the next generation of virtuosi have to say, and how, in the 2026 ANAM Recital series.
Solitude to Symphony
"The violin across four centuries of music. A voyage from solitude to a symphonic declaration. Every piece pushes the violin to its limits.
Come with me on this adventure, beginning with Johann Sebastian Bach and his grand cathedrals of composition. His Sonata for Solo Violin No. 1 in G Minor explores introspective reflection and the extrospective virtuosic possibilities of the violin. Matthew Hindson's Roadside Overdrive then draws us to the present day. As an expression on the versatility of violin playing, it draws influences from several styles of music. I had the privilege of working with Hindson on this piece, and it's a thrill to play.
Following Hindson's rhapsodic adventure, we neatly disembark at the virtuosity of the Franco-Belgian school of violin playing with Eugène Ysaÿe's sonata for solo violin No. 6 in E major. He wrote his solo sonatas as a bold reimagining of Bach, using the most daring technique and experimental harmonies of his day. Richard Strauss's Violin and Piano Sonata is the grand culmination of this journey. It is heroic, romantic and symphonic in its scale. Strauss admired Ysaÿe and the idea of the artist-as-hero, and that passion fills every phrase.
Bach and Strauss may seem worlds apart, but as I explored this program I found all these composers sought to push the limits of their instruments and composition. Perhaps even through these vast journeys, we can always admire the origins from which we embarked." — Raistlin Chan
