"Hello! I am super excited to present my second-year recital at ANAM with you!
Beginning with a fiery solo violin showpiece, Kreisler’s Recitativo and Scherzo-Caprice immediately introduces the recital’s exploration of contrasting colours and characters. Moving between a free, expressive Recitativo and a virtuosic Scherzo, the work showcases both the lyrical and playful sides of the violin.
Stanhope’s Agnus Dei (after the fire), written in response to the Black Saturday bushfires of 2009, searches for balance through fragments of sound that gradually form the plainchant of the Agnus Dei. It conveys grief and hope, solemnity and catharsis in a kind of wordless ritual.
Mel Bonis’ Violin Sonata follows with a deeply lyrical and romantic voice. Despite the beauty and individuality of her music, Bonis’ work remained largely overlooked during her lifetime, in part due to the severe gender discrimination she faced. The recital then shifts dramatically with Stravinsky’s Three Pieces for String Quartet, where rhythm, texture and colour take centre stage in three concise and striking movements.
Finally, Elgar’s La Capricieuse, in its arrangement for string quartet by the Brodsky Quartet, brings the program to a playful and spirited close. Together, these works move through a wide spectrum of colour and character, from fire and grief to lyricism, austerity and playfulness.
