ANAM Recital: Henry Eames

As a musician’s instrumental proficiency develops, so too does their artistic taste and temperament. Each ANAM musician’s recital is a snapshot in time – simultaneously summarising their year of training and revealing glimpses of their future selves. What music excites them? What do they want to communicate? How does their art help them understand the world better? Hear what the next generation of virtuosi have to say, and how, in the 2026 ANAM Recital series.

Virtuosity Through Time
"My recital program contains a diverse and varied list of challenging pieces that is set to showcase the virtuosity found within the horn repertoire. When creating this program, I wanted to include pieces that demonstrate virtuosity from different periods of horn playing, as well as explore the different aspects of horn playing.

The Poulenc Élégie was chosen as it was written in memory of the death of Dennis Brain, a horn prodigy and close friend of Poulenc. The Schumann Adagio and Allegro was chosen as I believe it encapsulates some of the best solo horn playing from the Romantic period. I chose to base the program around the Salonen Concert Étude, as this piece pushes the boundaries of what horn playing can be in a modern context. In contrast, the Mozart highlights what was regarded at the time as the pinnacle of horn playing.

Lastly, I wanted to bring light to an often neglected area of horn playing (the low register). This final piece explores the virtuosity of low horn playing in a way that is unlike the rest of the program."
