As a musician’s instrumental proficiency develops, so too does their artistic taste and temperament. Each ANAM musician’s recital is a snapshot in time – simultaneously summarising their year of training and revealing glimpses of their future selves. What music excites them? What do they want to communicate? How does their art help them understand the world better? Hear what the next generation of virtuosi have to say, and how, in the 2026 ANAM Recital series.
Beauty of Tone is Secondary
"Beauty of Tone Is Secondary takes its title from Hindemith’s striking instruction in his Sonata for Solo Viola, op. 25 no. 1: “Tonschönheit ist Nebensache” — “beauty of tone is secondary.” Across this program, however, that statement is explored rather than simply accepted. Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante celebrates elegance, brilliance and beauty of sound, while Brahms’ Sonata in F Minor finds a darker, more intimate and expressive voice. Hindemith pushes to the opposite extreme, at times asking character, urgency and wildness to take precedence over beautiful tone. Together, these three works explore how beauty in music is something not only actively sought but can be transformed, challenged, or momentarily cast aside." — Hanna Wallace
