HELP US RESTORE AND RENEW THE SOUTH MELBOURNE TOWN HALL: READ MORE

How Can I Help?

ANAM is currently seeking your support to save the South Melbourne Town Hall from further likely decline and give it an exciting new lease of life whilst preserving its history and heritage.

Help us save and renew the South Melbourne Town Hall in the following four ways:

STEP 1: SIGN THE OPEN LETTER

If you are a resident, worker or regular visitor to the Federal seat of Macnamara (where South Melbourne Town Hall is located), sign the Open Letter to the candidates in the seat for the forthcoming election urging them to support the project.

STEP 2: EMAIL MACNAMARA MAJOR PARTY CANDIDATES

If you are a resident, worker or regular visitor to the Federal seat of Macnamara (where South Melbourne Town Hall is located) you can email the major party candidates in the forthcoming election directly, urging them to support the project:

You may use these words, your own version of this or something completely different:

Dear [NAME]

I write to you as a resident, worker and/or regular visitor of Macnamara in support of the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM’s) plans to save and renew the South Melbourne Town Hall.

I ask you to commit a future Australian Government to providing $12.5m to ensure that ANAM’s plans for saving and refurbishing the building can proceed from the planning phase to construction.

The refurbishment of the Town Hall will create a piece of state-of-the-art cultural, educational and community infrastructure in the heart of Macnamara for at least the next 50 years, as well as providing safe and secure accommodation for ANAM.

ANAM has already secured $28.5m toward its bold renewal project representing a unique investment by a not-for-profit organisation in a piece of public infrastructure.

Failure of the Commonwealth Government to step in at this crucial time will mean that the beautiful designs of architect Peter Elliott  will sit on the shelf, collecting dust. This would be a tragic loss to the Macnamara community.

I urge you to act now, commit these funds, and ensure that this essential and visionary project may proceed.

STEP 3: EMAIL THESE VICTORIAN POLITICIANS

You can email the below Victorian politicians, urging them to make the necessary financial commitment to ensure that the project can proceed:

You may use these words, your own version of this or something completely different:

Dear [NAME]

I write to you in support of the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM’s) plans to save and refurbish the South Melbourne Town Hall.

Based in the Town Hall since 1996, the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) is one of Australia’s leading cultural training and performance organisations. ANAM’s alumni can be found in leadership positions in orchestras and ensembles in Australia and across the globe.

I ask you to commit the Victorian Government to providing $12.5m – matching a potential commitment from the Commonwealth – to ensure the delivery of ANAM’s visionary designs.

In playing host to a range of cultural and community activity, almost every day/night of the week, a refurbished Town Hall will become a destination venue, drawing visitors from across the city and driving improvements in retail, hospitality businesses and general precinct amenity.

Most importantly, in providing a safe and secure home for ANAM for at least the next 50 years, the renewed Town Hall will secure Victoria as the home to this internationally acclaimed organisation, thus significantly adding to the cultural wealth of the State.

ANAM’s forecast contribution of $29m of its own raised funds represents a unique investment by a not-for-profit organisation in a piece of public infrastructure (we are fortunate to have such a commitment to the cultural life of the State with us).

Without your support at this crucial moment, the beautiful designs of architect Peter Elliott will sit on a shelf, collecting dust, a major loss to the community.

I urge you to act now, commit these funds, and ensure that this major community, education and cultural infrastructure project can proceed.

STEP 4: SPREAD THE WORD

Help us spread the word about the project and its need for government support by sharing with your friends, family, neighbours and community on social media or in-person.

“With the building bursting every day and night of the week with music, comedy, dance, spoken word, theatre and circus, as well as community events of all shapes and sizes, the Town Hall will become a destination venue, providing access to a wide range of cultural, entertainment and activities for the community.

"We are excited to be at a pivotal point in making this bold vision a reality: all we need now is your support.”

– Nick Bailey, ANAM General Manager
