MusiciansPatrick Shannon

Patrick is a violist from Naarm/Melbourne who returns home in 2026 to commence his first year at ANAM, studying with Caroline Henbest.

Originally a violinist, Patrick began at age twelve and completed his Bachelor of Music at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music (MCM), University of Melbourne with Dr Elizabeth Sellars and Mark Mogilevski. A fateful Honours year switch to viola in 2022, studying with Wenhong Luo, set him firmly on a new path. This led Patrick to Austria the following year to join the class of Sào Soulez-Larivière at the Universität Mozarteum Salzburg.

From 2023 to 2025, Patrick was an orchestral academist with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, performing under Semyon Bychov, Sir Simon Rattle, Jakub Hrůša and touring throughout Asia, Europe, and North America. He has also performed with the Czech Student Philharmonic, the Australian Youth Orchestra, and the Melbourne Youth Orchestra.

A passionate chamber musician, Patrick is a founding member of the SPELL Quintet, winners of the 2022 MCM Chamber Music Competition. With the group he appeared at the Australian Festival of Chamber Music, working wth Timothy Ridout, Julian Smiles, and Charles Owen. He has also taken part in masterclasses with leading violists incuding Thomas Riebl, German Tcakulov, Wenting Kang, and Florian Peelman.

Patrick has a particular affinity for Early Music, having studied Historical Performance with Rachel Beesley, Shane Lestideau, and Donald Nicolson. He has also appeared as a soloist with both the MCM Baroque Ensemble and the Melbourne Baroque Ensemble.

Patrick's awards include the Ian Potter Cultural Trust Emerging Artist Grant, the Barbara Bishop Hewitt Scholarship, two Corinna D'Hage Mayer String Scholarships for Excellence, the Ellinor Gertrude Harris Bequest, and the 2022 MCM Concerto Competition Recording Prize.

Patrick draws much inspiration from the natural world, especially Australian birdlife, and from his interest in languages, European history and cooking.
