MusiciansLachlan McKie

Lachie is a 23-year-old Melbourne based violist with 18 years of experience on both the viola and violin; he is in his second year at ANAM studying with Caroline Henbest. A graduate of the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School (VCASS), Lachie initially began on violin before switching to viola and pursuing higher education. 

Throughout his studies, Lachie has had the privilege of learning from musicians Dale Barltrop, Christopher Moore, and Fintan Murphy. He has also performed for and collaborated with renowned musicians Richard Tognetti, Tahlia Petrosian, Christopher Cartlidge, and Stefanie Farrands. 

Lachie has gained extensive experience in chamber music, orchestral playing and solo performances in numerous concerts at ANAM and VCASS and when performing as a soloist at the Melbourne Recital Centre. Performing a diverse array of chamber music on both instruments, he has earnt accolades and won multiple eisteddfods and competitions. In 2025, Lachie was awarded ANAM’s Nick Deutsch Prize for the most Outstanding First Year musician.

Lachie has a profound passion for collaborative music-making, particularly within chamber music settings. He finds immense joy and inspiration in the intimate and intricate interplay of chamber ensembles, where each musician’s voice contributes to a cohesive and expressive whole. 

Lachie also enjoys composing and arranging, and away from music enjoys photography and is a passionate sports fan.
