MusiciansLachlan MacLaren

Lachlan is a violinist and sometime violist, currently based in Naarm/Melbourne. A wearer of many hats, his musical interests span all manner of styles and periods, from the Baroque to Broadway.

Lachlan earned a Bachelor of Music (Honours) from the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music (MCM), where he studied under Mark Mogilevski and was a three-time recipient of the Corinna D’Hage Mayer String Scholarship. In 2025, Lachlan commences his studies at ANAM under the tutelage of Adam Chalabi, Zoë Black, and Sophie Rowell.

Lachlan relishes the collaborative and creative opportunities presented by chamber music. Among his personal achievements as an undergraduate student, he is perhaps most proud to have co-founded SPELL Quintet, winners of the 2022 MCM Chamber Music Competition. In 2023, the group attended the International Masterclasses at the Australian Festival of Chamber Music, where they were tutored by Timothy Ridout, Charles Owen, and Julian Smiles. More recently, they performed to a sold-out crowd at the 2024 Peninsula Summer Music Festival. Lachlan also plays regularly with Inventi Ensemble, whose work involves standard concert appearances as well as outreach activities across regional Victoria and New South Wales. In this capacity, Lachlan has had the privilege of premiering works by Sally Whitwell, Caerwen Martin, Ella Macens, Tristan Coelho, and Cheryl Durongpisitkul.

Lachlan’s affinity for period instruments stems from a desire to explore the violin’s pre-industrial roots. At university, he was fortunate to study historical performance with Rachael Beesley, Shane Lestideau, Donald Nicholson and Lyndon Watts. As a member of the Melbourne Baroque Orchestra and Genesis Baroque, he has worked with the likes of Elizabeth Wallfisch, Mime Brinkmann, and Chad Kelly.

Lachlan is also a passionate music educator whose approach to teaching is informed by his own love of learning. It is important to him that students are inspired—not daunted—by the impossibility of conquering all that the violin has to offer.

Lachlan is currently amassing a sizeable but carefully curated compact disc collection to circumvent his car’s broken aux port. Current favourites include brat (Charli XCX), A Funk Odyssey (Jamiroquai), and A Christmas Album (Barbra Streisand).
