Lachlan is a violinist and sometime violist, currently based in Naarm/Melbourne. A wearer of many hats, his musical interests span all manner of styles and periods, from the Baroque to Broadway.
Lachlan earned a Bachelor of Music (Honours) from the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music (MCM), University of Melbourne, where he studied under Mark Mogilevski and was a three-time recipient of the Corinna D’Hage Mayer String Scholarship. Lachlan is in his second year at ANAM under the tutelage of Adam Chalabi and Zoë Black.
Lachlan relishes the collaborative and creative opportunities presented by chamber music. Among his personal achievements as an undergraduate student, he is most proud to have co-founded SPELL Quintet, winners of the 2022 MCM Chamber Music Competition. In 2023, the quintet attended the International Masterclasses at the Australian Festival of Chamber Music, where they were tutored by Timothy Ridout, Charles Owen, and Julian Smiles. In 2024, they performed to a sold-out crowd at the Peninsula Summer Music Festival.
Lachlan appears regularly with Inventi Ensemble, in concert performances as well as outreach activities across regional Victoria and New South Wales. In this capacity, Lachlan has had the privilege of premiering works by Sally Whitwell, Caerwen Martin, Ella Macens, Tristan Coelho, and Cheryl Durongpisitkul. Lachlan was also fortunate to perform at the Port Fairy Spring Music Festival, where he had the pleasure of working alongside Philip Arkinstall, Lee Bradshaw and Lior.
Lachlan is drawn to period instruments for the way their physical and mechanical quirks help to make sense of the music written for them. At university, he was fortunate to study historical performance with Rachael Beesley, Shane Lestideau, Donald Nicolson and Lyndon Watts. As a member of the Melbourne Baroque Orchestra and Genesis Baroque, he has worked with the likes of Elizabeth Wallfisch, Mime Brinkmann, and Chad Kelly.
Lachlan is currently amassing a sizeable but carefully curated compact disc collection to circumvent his car’s broken aux port. Recent favourites include Debussy’s Images (Jean-Efflam Bavouzet), Imagine (Eva Cassidy), and the evergreen Breakaway (Kelly Clarkson).
