MusiciansDaniel You

Originally from Brisbane, Queensland, Daniel is in his third year at the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) studying under Caroline Henbest. He is passionate about exploring the possibilities of dynamic music-making and musical expression.

Daniel completed his Bachelor of Music in Performance at the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University in 2021, guided by Elizabeth Morgan AM and the broader faculty of the Conservatorium, including Michele Walsh, György Deri, Paul Dean, and Peter Luff. During his degree, a cherished highlight is performing the Bruch Double Concerto alongside dear friend and colleague Simon Redshaw and the Queensland Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Johannes Fritszch in 2021.

An avid chamber musician, Daniel has enjoyed performing with various combinations of instruments. He has frequently performed in a clarinet trio alongside Simon Redshaw and Reuben Johnson, presenting music ranging from Beethovenʼs Piano Trio no. 1 (arranged for clarinet, viola and piano), the “fast, [and] vigorousˮ Night Window by Brett Dean, and a premiere of a commissioned work by Australian composer, Frankie Dyson Reilly.

Orchestrally, Daniel has been Principal Viola with the Queensland Youth Symphony Orchestra (2017-19) touring China and Germany in 2017. He has also held the position of Principal Viola with the Queensland Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra.

Whilst at ANAM, Daniel has enjoyed working alongside professional artists in various residencies. Some favourite performance highlights include performing alongside British viola soloist Lawrence Power, David Kim, concertmaster of the Philadelphia Orchestra; and members of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. Daniel has also really enjoyed being involved in ANAMʼs educational and community engagement programs.

Daniel plays on a viola made in 2021 by Kae Sato-Goodsell, named “Jayuˮ (“freedomˮ).
