MusiciansCaleb Goldsmith

Caleb is in his second year at ANAM studying with Peter Neville and John Arcaro.

Originally from New Zealand, Caleb completed a Bachelor of Music majoring in percussion performance at the University of Auckland, and initially studied under the tutelage of Eric Renick and Steve Logan from the Auckland Philharmonia.

Caleb has a vast array of orchestral experience and has performed with numerous orchestras throughout Auckland and beyond. He has performed in the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra’s National Youth Orchestra, as Principal Percussionist at the Auckland Youth Orchestra, and casually with Auckland Philharmonia, Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, Manukau Symphony Orchestra, and the Hawkes Bay Orchestra. Caleb is a passionate orchestral musician and looks forward to further orchestral percussion and performance in his future.

As timpanist for Bach Musica NZ for 2023 and 2024, Caleb dabbled in the baroque style of drumming. As a soloist, he has performed at the New Zealand chapter of the International Percussive Arts Festival held in Christchurch. A highlight of his first year at ANAM was performing in a public masterclass with percussion extraordinaire Steve Schick.

Throughout his studies, Caleb has performed in a variety of chamber ensembles, ranging from percussion trios and quartets to a trio with harpsichord and cello, as a member of larger brass ensembles and beyond.  A highly sought after freelance percussionist, Caleb’s credits include Wicked the Musical, Mamma Mia, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, and SYNTHONY.

Caleb particularly enjoys collaborating with other instrumentalists, especially the cello, often arranging and writing new works. In 2023, Caleb’s percussion/piano quartet was awarded the top prize in the University of Auckland Chamber music competition. As a conductor and percussion teacher in various high schools, Caleb enjoys leading ensembles from the podium.

In his time off from ANAM, (and as a patriotic kiwi) Caleb enjoys heading home to New Zealand. He has a keen interest in travel, skiing, cooking, Formula 1 and occasionally works as an extra on TV!
