ANAM Alum Phoebe Gardner heading to Berlin

Alumni

We are delighted to announce Phoebe Gardner (violin, 2021) as the fourth ANAM alum to take up the ANAM Eva Besen Scholarship at the prestigious Karajan Academy, the training organisation of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.

Phoebe’s appointment continues the close relationship between ANAM and the Berlin Philharmonic’s Karajan Academy and is made possible by the generous support of the Naomi Milgrom Foundation. Phoebe follows in the footsteps of ANAM violinists Harry Bennetts (2016), currently SSO Associate Concertmaster, Riley Skevington (2018), WASO Associate Concertmaster and Harry Ward (2020), recently appointed as First Violin in the Berlin Philharmonic.

Phoebe Gardner said:

“My entire musical life I’ve looked up to and treasured recordings of Berlin Philharmonic, so to have the opportunity to live in the beautiful city of Berlin and to attend the Karajan Academy is a dream come true. I’m incredibly grateful to have received this scholarship from ANAM which has made this opportunity possible.”

Phoebe completed her training at ANAM in 2021, following which she undertook a Masters at the Julliard School in New York City. At ANAM, she was prize-winner in the ANAM Concerto Competition, performed Mozart Violin Concerto No. 5 as part of the Mostly Mozart Series at the Melbourne Recital Centre, participated in ANAM’s national tour with the Australian Chamber Orchestra (ACO), and was a member of the ACO’s Emerging Artist Program. In New York, where she was recipient of the Dorothy DeLay Violin Scholarship at Julliard, she has worked with conductors David Robertson, Nicholas Carter and Giancarlo Guerrero.

“I am absolutely thrilled that another ANAM alum will be entering the Karajan Academy, the educational branch of the Berlin Philharmonic, arguably the world’s most legendary orchestra”, said ANAM Artistic Director Paavali Jumppanen. “ANAM’s training supports a great variety of potential career paths for young musicians, and the dream of playing in a symphony orchestra is perhaps the most popular such path among our musicians. The possibility to learn the orchestral craft at the Karajan Academy is priceless, and we are proud of the partnership between ANAM and the Karajan Academy, and grateful to the Naomi Milgrom Foundation, which makes this partnership possible. I congratulate Phoebe for having earned a spot and look forward to hearing how her studies in Berlin progress”.

Naomi Milgrom AC said: “Our Foundation is proud to continue our support of emerging Australian musicians at ANAM to attend the Karajan Academy of the Berlin Philharmonic. This important scholarship program with ANAM directly connects our young musicians to the world’s leading artists. We warmly congratulate this year’s recipient, violinist Phoebe Gardner."

Phoebe will be mentored by Berlin Philharmonic Concertmaster Noah Bendix-Balgley and will commence in Berlin in September this year.

Congratulations Phoebe!
