Salina Fisher's (ANAM Set 2024) Unfinished Portrait is music drawn from letters between painter Rita Angus and composer Douglas Lilburn whose friendship was built through exchange, and ultimately left unresolved. Ivette Herryman Rodríguez's Adagio y Danza, for trumpet, horn, and trombone, moves from reflection into the joy of Cuban dance.
Bohuslav Martinů's Nonet No. 2 is a masterwork written near the end of his life. Music finds an unexpected cheer: folk-like turns, sudden brightness, and an ending that opens instead of closing. Then the mood turns. Poulenc's Élégie, written for the memory of tragically deceased horn greatness Dennis Brain, keeps him present through the very instrument he played.
Johannes Brahms's Piano Quartet No. 3 closes the festival. In this work, written at the height of his powers, Brahms epitomizes his dramatic power within the chamber music genre. Listening to this masterwork, we may sense a tragedy–Brahms himself referred to “The Sorrows of Young Werther” by Goethe when talking about the work. Whether in fact that tragedy had been lived through the composer himself remains a mystery.
