This concert turns its lens into a microscope, focused toward the world beneath our feet and the sounds normally too hidden to notice.
Georg Friedrich Handel's Water Suite No. 2 was first played from a barge drifting down the Thames, commissioned by King George I, framing a moment when music slipped out from the court and into the open air.
Karlheinz Stockhausen's Amour is a cycle for solo clarinet, a movement heard in this concert, Die schmetterlinge spielen mimics a butterfly's flutter in rhyhtm alone—Stockhausen called it "the play of butterflies".
Fritz Hauser and Usko Meriläinen both listened for insects. Hauser's As We Are Speaking is almost literal—wooden instrments, chopsticks, no fixed pattern, just the irregular pulse of cicadas. Meriläinen's Suvisoitto ("Summersounds") is more imagined: flute and electronics conjuring grasshoppers, cicadas, Japanese meadow crickets in gestures and vanish as soon as they arrive.
This concert will see ANAM Faculty and Head of Violin, Adam Chalabi join the musicians on stage.
