The Linke Between
for solo horn
Composed for Calen Linke

Performed as part of The ANAM Set 2024

This ANAM Set commission was generously supported by the Australian Government through Creative Australia and the Anthony and Sharon Lee Foundation

Program note:
This piece is based loosely on fragments of the Hurrian melody, the oldest known notated song in human history. This is a melody that we all share. The song was written in cuneiform on clay tablet around 1400 B.C.E. in Syria. The repeated tremolo notes emulate the distinctive sound of the ancient lyre which would have been used to perform this song. This work is dedicated to the victims in Gaza during the 2023/24 Palestine-Israel conflict

About the composer:
Miriama Young (she/her) is an Aotearoa-Australian composer and sound artist based at the University of Melbourne Conservatorium of Music. With a childhood as a cathedral chorister, and teenage years steeped in jazz and blues, her music reveals the influences of numinous ecclesiastical vocal music with the vibrant rhythms and harmonies of jazz. Her work is grounded in ecological concerns of the Anthropocene age.

On a quest for the mysterious and sublime, Miriama’s output ranges from orchestral to chamber music, with works blending electroacoustic elements and field recordings. Her compositions defy genre distinctions, spanning mediums such as film scores, installations, and orchestral works. Her work has been performed by ensembles across the globe, from the Sydney Symphony Orchestra to the Scottish Opera.
