Born and raised in Naarm/Melbourne, Timothy O’Malley has always been avidly engaged with music making. After a brief and unfortunate attempt at learning the violin aged five, he was enrolled by his parents in piano lessons. What ensued, much to the constant irritation of his family, was a love of playing as many notes as quickly as possible.
He was encouraged with this new-found passion all through school by fabulous teachers; Eve Jozsa and Mark McGee. During this time, he also took up trumpet and piano accordion (on which he discovered loud noises were also possible) and participated in as many bands, ensembles, choirs and productions as was feasible.
Through his undergraduate studies in music at the University of Melbourne he had the privilege to learn with Jerry Wong at the piano and studied Continuo with Donald Nicolson. He participated in performances with many University Ensembles on Organ, Harpsichord, and Piano. In 2024 he commences his studies at the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) learning under Timothy Young.
Passionate about all types of music, Timothy loves playing anything from Celtic Folk Music to Integral Serialism. He also is a committed collaborative pianist and has performed as a Lieder Pianist in masterclasses with Andrea Katz and Graham Johnson, as well in the 2023 National Liederfest finals alongside Soprano Breanna Stuart with a program of Schoenberg.
In his free time, Tim enjoys cooking massive amounts of soup, learning new languages, and playing tenor horn with his local Brass Band.
Tim is supported by ANAM Syndicate donors Min Jiang, Marie Rowland, Margaret Morey, Jeanne McMullin, Elizabeth Nye.
