Paavali Jumppanen
Artistic Director, ANAM
ANAM Artistic Director (2021-2026); Guest Artist (2010, 2013, 2016)
Just as the breadth of classical music cannot be fully described in any number of words, I feel that the extent of ANAM’s mission cannot either. But if I were to try to sum it up, I would say that ANAM is a unique expression of the complexity and emotional power of music itself.
ANAM is a buzzing musical factory, a laboratory, and a workshop. It is a stage and a greenroom, and a lounge where a musician and an audience member can meet before or after a performance. ANAM is the start of a career and a producer of the most daring musical ideas. It is just as vibrantly alive between concerts as it is during them. Day in, day out, our musicians hone their instrumental skills, practise ensemble playing, and study musical works. They go to lessons and rehearsals, they spend time in the gardens, and they talk with friends and strangers. ANAM musicians bring their youth to the Academy and spend their formative years learning from each other.

Embedded in the fabric of ANAM is an open-minded attitude and an active curiosity about music and the arts. Classical music, even in its name, is anchored in tradition, but this is not a rigid anchor. Tradition needs freedom and openness to be revitalised every day. Every performance of Mozart or Bacewicz requires study, the incorporation of new ideas, and new ways of living through their music. And there is a world full of new Mozarts and Bacewiczes, putting to paper the sounds they hear resonating in the world today. Their music is nurtured at ANAM as well.
Returning to the buzz of ANAM — it is something I felt strongly when I first walked into the building in 2010. And this same buzz, fuelled and renewed by all the people who walk through its doors today, continues to inspire me every day at ANAM.
