ANAM Recital: Ronan Apcar

As a musician’s instrumental proficiency develops, so too does their artistic taste and temperament. Each ANAM musician’s recital is a snapshot in time - simultaneously summarising their year of training and revealing glimpses of their future selves. What music excites them? What do they want to communicate? How does their art help them understand the world better? Experience the unique and intimate points of view of each musician individually in this recital series. Hear what the next generation of virtuosi have to say, and how.

The dark side of intimacy

At a surface level, we think of intimacy as just love and sex. But intimacy is so much more than that. It's that human need for closeness with those around us - yes, lovers, but also friends, family, and community. It's sitting quietly and being honest with yourself. It's the way societal pressures can infiltrate every inch of your private life.

And intimacy is wonderful. To be truly intimate with someone, something, yourself is liberating and exhilarating. But when it goes wrong, it hurts. When you lose that lover; when you're betrayed by your friends, family, or community; when you finally confront neglected ugly truths about yourself; when the pressure from the outside finally breaks you down and you spiral - it really hurts. And yet, we still crave it. We can't live without it, so we suffer for the chance of an intimacy that makes life worth living.

This program is about the dark side of intimacy. It's a collection of alternative pop and rock songs arranged for a singer, piano and keyboard, and a string octet, with solo piano/keyboard interludes.

"It's intense. I mean, this program is basically about how it sucks to have feelings. So, picking and choosing all the music - and especially deciding to write a piece about my own experiences of "the dark side of intimacy" - it's pretty personal.

Most of the program are arrangements I did by ear of alt-pop and indie songs I love listening to - where else would be better to find music for this program? I'm stoked to be joined by friends from my past couple years for my last ANAM recital, and beyond excited we're playing Björk. She's my #1!" - Ronan Apcar
