“I confess that I am pleased to have created a work which – false vanity aside – will occupy a special niche. In point of technique these Études will usefully prepare pianists for a better understanding of the fact that the portals of music can only be opened with formidable hands.” – Claude Debussy

In 1909 Claude Debussy, upon the recommendation of Gabriel Faure, joined the advisory board of the Paris Conservatoire where he would then serve as an adjudicator for the examinations for wind instruments. In 1910 he compsed Petite pièce as a short test for sight reading and the demanding concert piece Première rhapsodie, a work that has now become a bestseller of the clarinet repertoire, and in Debussy's own words "one of the loveliest pieces I've ever composed."
