A Bernstein Celebration

ANAM at Melbourne Recital Centre

Leonard Bernstein’s music, as with his conducting, as with his life, is extravagant and impassioned, emotive, and always joyfully life affirming. It swoops and soars, dips and dives, taking from here, there and everywhere, but always ends up by ‘being Bernstein’. The rowdy and raucous downtown Divertimento, full of bustling energy, cannot help but bring a smile to the weariest of dials, as does the wonderful Candide Suite which sees one glorious number tumble out on top of another.

“Throughout the conductor and the orchestra were so intrinsically in sync that they seemed like a long married couple that finishes one another’s sentences. By the end of the symphony, Gomez needed only shrug a shoulder or turn towards the musicians to get them to respond with glorious results. ” - Cathalena E. Burch, Arizona Daily Star, Oct 30th 2015

"It is incredibly infectious, in an amazing way, how Leonard Bernstein’s music would easily make you dance. I think his music, apart from being so wonderfully and perfectly crafted, is straight forward and honest in every single moment that connects so easily and can really make you dance!" - José Luis Gomez (Read more from Gomez on the Life at ANAM blog)
