ANAM Recital: Ariel Volovelsky

As a musician’s instrumental proficiency develops, so too does their artistic taste and temperament. Each ANAM musician’s recital is a snapshot in time - simultaneously summarising their year of training and revealing glimpses of their future selves. What music excites them? What do they want to communicate? How does their art help them understand the world better? Experience the unique and intimate points of view of each musician individually in this recital series. Hear what the next generation of virtuosi have to say, and how.

In 2024 the ANAM Set is back in a special iteration. Musicians in their 3rd year of training present a specially commissioned work as part of their recital program.

Pointing to infinity

This is an ambitiously eclectic recital - from the high-octane Japanese bluegrass of Paul Wiancko and the viscerally virtuosic textures of Saariaho’s Sept Papillons through the sacred music of Pérotin to the high romanticism of César Franck. I hope to highlight the beauty and ability to transform that are the hallmarks of our species.

"The pieces on this program are some of my absolute favourite works of art and I’m excited at the chance to weave them together into a single narrative and share it with the wonderful ANAM audience.

Quick update on recital prep - 6 weeks out and works are all learned. Now I am working towards performing them in different contexts at ANAM and experimenting with the best way of presenting them. It is an extremely challenging program including some difficulties I have never encountered before - but this has forced me to get very creative about troubleshooting and problem solving so it has been fun to see them melt away." - Ariel Volovelsky
