ANAM Recital: Timothy O'Malley

As a musician’s instrumental proficiency develops, so too does their artistic taste and temperament. Each ANAM musician’s recital is a snapshot in time - simultaneously summarising their year of training and revealing glimpses of their future selves. What music excites them? What do they want to communicate? How does their art help them understand the world better? Experience the unique and intimate points of view of each musician individually in this recital series. Hear what the next generation of virtuosi have to say, and how.

Wandering Wonderings

" 'Über Wander- und Wunderland;' taken from Paul Hohenberg's poem 'Sommertage,' is from the text which Alban Berg set to music as the final lied in his Seven Early Songs. Translating roughly as 'across lands of wandering and wonder,' Hohenberg conjures a grandiose vision in his description of the night sky. This piano and lieder program investigates the wonderings of three composers: Schubert's evocations of his fatalistic character "the wanderer;" Berg's scenes of expansive wonderment; and Shchedrin's meandering jazzy bass-lines. Alongside my friend and soprano Breanna Stuart, I hope to present this recital of three wonderful works.

Practise and preparation is coming along well, I have been working on the Schubert for a month or so now. Wolfram Schmitt-Leonardy in his time as guest head of piano has been super helpful in refining it. I actually performed a selection of the Berg Lieder earlier in the year, so I look forward to reviving it and completing the set. It is early days for the Shchedrin, but I'm particularly excited to get my teeth into it!" - Timothy O'Malley
