ANAM Recital: Steven Bryer

As a musician’s instrumental proficiency develops, so too does their artistic taste and temperament. Each ANAM musician’s recital is a snapshot in time - simultaneously summarising their year of training and revealing glimpses of their future selves. What music excites them? What do they want to communicate? How does their art help them understand the world better? Experience the unique and intimate points of view of each musician individually in this recital series. Hear what the next generation of virtuosi have to say, and how.

A re-imagining of some of Ravel's famous works - allowing percussion in to a world we normally do not inhabit

"This program will be rewarding for me - not only as a performance, but also it is allowing me to dip my toe into the world of arranging music for percussion. I grew up listening to a lot of different classical music, as my parents are both musicians and instrumental teachers. There were so many different composers' styles I really loved, and the more I started learning percussion the more I began to realise that our repertoire just didn't include many pieces of those styles I enjoyed. I have found myself thinking many times, about how amazing it would be if some of the great composers could see how percussion was used today, and what they might do with that.  For this program I chose to focus on Ravel, as I could always hear how well the second movement of his string quartet would work on my instrument, and wanted to see what else I could do with other pieces of his.

The prep is going great - all my arranging is done, and I can't wait to hear how it sounds in real life rather than on midi instruments! I read through the string quartet earlier this year with the other percussionists, and I'm super excited to be able to share it with everyone." - Steven Bryer
