ANAM Recital: Reuben Johnson

As a musician’s instrumental proficiency develops, so too does their artistic taste and temperament. Each ANAM musician’s recital is a snapshot in time - simultaneously summarising their year of training and revealing glimpses of their future selves. What music excites them? What do they want to communicate? How does their art help them understand the world better? Experience the unique and intimate points of view of each musician individually in this recital series. Hear what the next generation of virtuosi have to say, and how.

In 2024 the ANAM Set is back in a special iteration. Musicians present a specially commissioned work as part of their recital program.

Methods of harmony: an exploration into the ordering of tones

"For hundreds of years, composers of Western music have all faced the same limitation—there are only 12 distinct pitches in our musical scale. This is particularly noticeable on keyboard instruments, but even string and wind players take great care to only play within these 12 pitches, avoiding any others. Slightly out-of-tune notes and portamenti are used as expressive devices, but not as a foundation for harmony.

Many composers have developed unique approaches, systems, and languages within this 'constraint,' if you can call it that. I have chosen a few examples of works that use vastly different harmonic schemes to demonstrate the possibilities and creativity within this framework.

Sainbury, a guitarist, has developed a system of harmony based on the inverse notes of strings. When fretting a note, in addition to the desired pitch, there is also a pitch produced 'behind' the fretted note. Combining these pitches often creates unexpected but beautiful results."

"I've been enjoying creating a program with some interesting thematic content. A lot of hard work is now underway to get all the notes under the fingers. I'm also very privileged to be joined by our Artistic Director Paavali Jumppanen for the world premier of the new piece by Christopher Sainsbury."
