Each ANAM musician’s recital is a snapshot in time - simultaneously summarising their year of training and revealing glimpses of their future selves. What music excites them? What do they want to communicate? How does their art help them understand the world better? Experience the unique and intimate points of view of each musician individually in this recital series. Hear what the next generation of virtuosi have to say, and how.
The evolution of the cello sonata
"In my recital, I’ll be exploring three cello sonatas that highlight the evolution of the cello’s repertoire. Beethoven’s 2nd Cello Sonata in C Major is full of clarity and drive, pushing the boundaries of what the cello could express in his time. Brahms’ 2nd Cello Sonata in F Major showcases the more expressive, lyrical side of the instrument, embodying the true essence of a romantic sonata. Finally, Ligeti’s Solo Cello Sonata, with its unique textures and complex techniques, challenges both performer and listener to embrace the bold modernity of the 20th century.
The preparation for this recital has been intense but incredibly rewarding. At the moment, I’m experimenting with new colours and vibrato in my practice. I just started learning the Brahms last week, so that will be a fun challenge! But everything is coming together, and I’m excited to share it with everyone in November!" - Max Wung
