ANAM Recital: Mattea Osenk

As a musician’s instrumental proficiency develops, so too does their artistic taste and temperament. Each ANAM musician’s recital is a snapshot in time - simultaneously summarising their year of training and revealing glimpses of their future selves. What music excites them? What do they want to communicate? How does their art help them understand the world better? Experience the unique and intimate points of view of each musician individually in this recital series. Hear what the next generation of virtuosi have to say, and how.

In 2024 the ANAM Set is back in a special iteration. Musicians in their 3rd year of training present a specially commissioned work as part of their recital program.

Viola and Voice: the vessel of emotion

This program is an exploration and a celebration of the viola's ability to express a range of emotions in various contetxs and roles within music. It is able to capture exuberance and charm through Rebecca Clarke's sonata for Viola and Piano, interacting in exciting dialogue with the piano. It plays a much more complex role within the string quartet, particularly Debussy’s String Quartet in G minor. We colour the sound, provide textures, but also find ourselves in moments of telling the story for ourselves. In my final piece, Aftermath for singing violist, it is my own voice and the voice of my viola that become one, in order to paint a picture of devastation and hope.

"It has been such a joy to prepare this program and incredibly rewarding. ANAM has encouraged me and has provided me the liberty to discover my own voice and artistic desires, while also learning so much and being inspired by my associate artists." - Mattea Osenk
