ANAM Recital: Madeleine Aarons

As a musician’s instrumental proficiency develops, so too does their artistic taste and temperament. Each ANAM musician’s recital is a snapshot in time - simultaneously summarising their year of training and revealing glimpses of their future selves. What music excites them? What do they want to communicate? How does their art help them understand the world better? Experience the unique and intimate points of view of each musician individually in this recital series. Hear what the next generation of virtuosi have to say, and how.

In 2024 the ANAM Set is back in a special iteration. Musicians in their 3rd year of training present a specially commissioned work as part of their recital program.

A self indulgent reflection of my life

"The first peice is the Gordon jacobs concerto, when I’m playing this peice I am taken back to my youth and my experience of living in the U.K. This English music brings up feeling of nostalgia and childhood. I think this is quintessentially English music!

Evolution was a piece commissioned for my 21st birthday. It is a musical retelling of my life and experiences. Struggles, successes and everything in between. I feel incredibly lucky to be premiering this piece in my first year recital.

The final piece is the Robert Kahn 'Serenade'. I have always loved oboe and think that the colours of horn and oboe are meant to go together. I am also paying homage to my Jewish identity by playing peices by Jewish composers Kahn and Katz-Chernin.

Recital prep is going well. I'm starting rehearsals for the Kahn in the upcoming week with Josh and can’t wait to collaborate and create music with one of my favourite instruments!
The concerto is still a work in progress as it's very technically challenging but I'm enjoying the process and loving the music.

The Elena Katz-Chernin is in the works. It’s been interesting playing a piece that’s been written specifically for me. It’s been a challenge creating something that feels entirely my own! There is a certain apprehension that comes with total freedom." - Madeleine Aarons
