As a musician’s instrumental proficiency develops, so too does their artistic taste and temperament. Each ANAM musician’s recital is a snapshot in time - simultaneously summarising their year of training and revealing glimpses of their future selves. What music excites them? What do they want to communicate? How does their art help them understand the world better? Experience the unique and intimate points of view of each musician individually in this recital series. Hear what the next generation of virtuosi have to say, and how.
In 2024 the ANAM Set is back in a special iteration. Musicians in their 3rd year of training present a specially commissioned work as part of their recital program.
Tying Knots
"My program for my ANAM first year recital contains a real variety of textures and remains to be cyclic in relation to Australian composers. Starting with the sparse and spacious Irkanda I for solo violin, written by Peter Sculthorpe, this program increases in density as it progresses. The audience and myself will weave our way through the classical and neo-classical styles of Brahms and Nielsen and explore the vast and expansive ideas that they may have to offer. The journey will close with Elizabeth Younan’s Interwoven String Quartet No. 1 which is in turn, a compression of musical ideas, but one that is extremely visceral and thrilling.
I am enjoying preparing for this program, it is equally challenging as it is enjoyable to play on all fronts for me. I am excited to play the Nielsen Violin Concerto for my program as it is a Violin Concerto that is often overlooked or not very well known. The Poco Adagio movement possesses a true sense of beauty while the Rondo movement really explores a sense of cheekiness, playfulness and fun which really is a joy to play. The Brahms Violin Sonata is a wonderfully challenging piece of chamber music and I am keen to work on this with my associate artist Aidan Boase. This is my first recital program that contains Australian works, so I am incredibly eager to perform these works by Sculthorpe and Younan. The Sculthorpe lies within a sound world that I have never performed myself in a solo setting, so I am excited to explore and expand my performance technique in this way, and by finishing with the Younan String Quartet, I get to finish my recital program for 2024 with some of my closet friends which I believe is a perfect way to end." - Lili Stephens
