ANAM Recital: Isabella Thomas

As a musician’s instrumental proficiency develops, so too does their artistic taste and temperament. Each ANAM musician’s recital is a snapshot in time - simultaneously summarising their year of training and revealing glimpses of their future selves. What music excites them? What do they want to communicate? How does their art help them understand the world better? Experience the unique and intimate points of view of each musician individually in this recital series. Hear what the next generation of virtuosi have to say, and how.

Trumpet Transmuted

"This recital serves as a trumpet smorgasbord, showcasing some of the instrument’s many personalities and forms. You’ll hear pieces written for the Bb trumpet as well as for the piccolo trumpet and cornet. Whether baroque or romantic is your favourite era, or if you are allergic to trumpet music altogether and want to smash the thing to pieces, there is something for you. I really enjoy the trumpet; I enjoy making fun sounds and playing a lovely tune. I couldn’t decide on a linking theme for this recital, because my passion is for the versatility of the trumpet. Jazz, classical, old, new. I love it all, and I hope you do too!

I am really enjoying practising chunks of one work and then completely switching genres to  brush up another piece. I am looking forward to teaming up with Louisa Breen and several of my ANAM colleagues to start rehearsing the jazzy Rag-Polka from Bolling’s Toot Suite, and the Corelli Sonata in D Major for Trumpet, Strings and Continuo. Never having played with electronics before now, I am particularly excited to premiere my ANAM set piece, a sunflower fades, written by my kiwi friend and wonderful composer Callum Mallet." - Isabella Thomas
