ANAM Recital: Heesoo Kim

As a musician’s instrumental proficiency develops, so too does their artistic taste and temperament. Each ANAM musician’s recital is a snapshot in time - simultaneously summarising their year of training and revealing glimpses of their future selves. What music excites them? What do they want to communicate? How does their art help them understand the world better? Experience the unique and intimate points of view of each musician individually in this recital series. Hear what the next generation of virtuosi have to say, and how.

In 2024 the ANAM Set is back in a special iteration. Musicians in their 3rd year of training present a specially commissioned work as part of their recital program.

Cello virtuosity across centuries

This program, arranged in chronological order, traces the evolution of cello virtuosity and composition from the Baroque era to the modern age. It begins with Boccherini’s Sonata G.15 in G Major, showcasing the elegance of his style and the virtuosity of the cello. The journey continues with Claude Debussy’s ‘Cello Sonata in D Minor’ introducing a palette of different colours and textures of the instrument. The program concludes with Stravinsky’s ‘Suite Italienne’ based on his ballet ‘Pulcinella’, which ties the performance together as it draws its inspiration from Italian Baroque music.

"Exploring through the different periods has not only broadened my mind on understanding how things work on the cello but also transformed how I approach works. It's been an exciting process delving into the different characters of Stravinsky's Suite Italienne, the intricate details and depth of  Debussy's Sonata and technical brilliance in Boccherini's Sonata. Each piece offers a unique challenge and insight, making the process both rewarding and inspiring." - Heesoo Kim
