ANAM Recital: Francis Atkins

As a musician’s instrumental proficiency develops, so too does their artistic taste and temperament. Each ANAM musician’s recital is a snapshot in time - simultaneously summarising their year of training and revealing glimpses of their future selves. What music excites them? What do they want to communicate? How does their art help them understand the world better? Experience the unique and intimate points of view of each musician individually in this recital series. Hear what the next generation of virtuosi have to say, and how.

In 2024 the ANAM Set is back in a special iteration. Musicians in their 3rd year of training present a specially commissioned work as part of their recital program.

Russian Romantics: Rachmaninoff and Rimsky-Korsakov

"Rachmaninoff's opus 23 is a series of musical microcosms which have been following me insistently for the fourteen years of my musical training. As a teenager, I was ripped rather unceremoniously from my love of Mozart and Beethoven when I heard Horowitz's THUNDEROUS recording of the fifth prelude. I was hooked immediately; my mother and neighbours however weren't quite as thrilled with this new discovery of mine.

As a challenge to myself in my first ANAM year, I embarked on the journey of completing this cycle of preludes, and will be presenting a selection of my favourites.

To pair with these miniatures, Rimsky-Korsakov's quintet for piano and winds is music that can only be described as pure joy! I'm privileged to present this work alongside my wonderful friends. At ANAM the feeling amongst us musicians is that there is always too much to do, and never enough time to do it! (That's about the only way to describe this feeling)

I'm excited that this semester has become a hub for inspiration and new ideas, as each month brings a new guest lecturer to coach the piano department in our performance preparation." - Francis Atkins
