ANAM Recital: Emma John

As a musician’s instrumental proficiency develops, so too does their artistic taste and temperament. Each ANAM musician’s recital is a snapshot in time - simultaneously summarising their year of training and revealing glimpses of their future selves. What music excites them? What do they want to communicate? How does their art help them understand the world better? Experience the unique and intimate points of view of each musician individually in this recital series. Hear what the next generation of virtuosi have to say, and how.

A journey from the ground to the stars

"When I was curating this program, I was really interested in telling a story. I found myself drawn to a few works that were written to capture ideas about Australian fauna. These were Catherine Likhuta's 'Dreams of a Wombat' and Liza Lim's 'Dianna' (a piece that emulates magpies and references Greek mythology). From these two works, a progression began to emerge. The recital begins with two works inspired by the nightime wanderings of Wombats and a Rhinoceros, before moving to Messiaen's 'Interstellar Call,' a piece featuring bird and other animal calls that moves to call out into the vast, unknowing universe. 'Dianna' follows this before we finish with a Nocturne. The only accompanied piece in the recital, this is a moment of beauty and transcendence to represent the heavens we have called out to and reached.

Since the majority of my recital is unaccompanied, it has been a very interesting process not only learn to the notes, but also to develop the music in a way that creates a far reaching atmosphere. As a lesser performed instrument, I'm really excited for the audience to hear the horn in such an intimate and exposed setting. It's a bit scary, but the music is so special that I can't wait to share it with everyone!" - Emma John
