Messiaen's Turangalila-Symphonie (AWO and ANAM)

The performance will be the culmination of a unique artistic collaboration between the Australian World Orchestra (AWO) and ANAM where Australia’s next generation of musical talent are mentored by Australia’s finest musicians from both home and abroad. For this one time only spectacular performance, Australian conductor and ANAM audience favourite, Simone Young AM, leads AWO and ANAM in Messiaen’s mammoth Turangalîla-Symphonie.
Messiaen’s Turangalîla is both a monumental symphony and a virtuosic piano concerto, an epic symphonic 'love song' demanding the full commitment of over one hundred orchestral musicians. Turangalîla is considered one of the most important pieces of the 20th century and is scored for a huge orchestra, with multiple percussionists, brass, winds and a virtuosic piano solo which will be performed by Timothy Young and featuring Jacob Abela on the electronic ondes Martenot – an instrument familiar to fans of Hitchcock’s soundtracks.
