Jan Williams is a percussionist, arts administrator, teacher, conductor and composer who has championed avant-garde and progressive music in the United States. He is recognised as an important proponent of percussion performance and its literature.
Composers who have written works especially for him include Lukas Foss, John Cage, Elliott Carter, Morton Feldman, Iannis Xenakis, Frederic Rzewski, Joel Chadabe, Orlando Garcia, Gustavo Matamoros, Luis de Pablo, and Nils Vigeland. Appearing internationally as a percussionist, conductor, and educator throughout the United States, Europe, New Zealand and Australia, Jan Williams has also recorded for notable labels including Columbia, Wergo, Hat-Art, frozen New World and EMF Records.
