ANAM’s Performance Program is a 12-month non-accredited program, designed to meet the optimum developmental requirements of each individual musician. On successful completion of the year’s activities, musicians may reapply (annually) for up to two years’ further study. ANAM has developed a quality training program delivered by an esteemed Faculty of professional musicians. The program structure incorporates extensive face-to-face and quality online training, and includes:

STUDIO TRAINING AND SOLO PERFORMANCE
Violin, Viola, Cello and Piano - 32* hours / semester
Other instruments - 19* hours / semester
*first year allocation
Musicians (excluding piano and percussion) attend regular Instrument Classes, approximately 14 / semester, presented by Faculty and guest artists.
Musicians attend weekly Section Classes (strings, winds, brass, piano, percussion), the content varying throughout each semester.
Performance Class provides the opportunity for musicians to perform repertoire for their peers in a simulated concert environment, stage-managed by their colleagues, with feedback provided by Faculty.
ANAM presents a series of In-House and public masterclasses throughout the year presented by some of the world's great instrumentalists and ensembles. In partnership with the Melbourne Recital Centre, Musica Viva Australia, and Sanguine Estate Music Festival.
Musicians will present one 50-minute public recital each year.
Musicians are required to enter the annual Concerto Competition at least once during their time at ANAM. The Final is performed in Hobart with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra at Federation Concert Hall, and recorded for broadcast by ABC Classic.
Performing chamber music is a key part of the Performance Program. Enabling a culture of chamber music making across the ANAM cohort, each musician will be allocated an ensemble at the start of the year that will receive coaching by a Faculty Mentor. The aim is for every musician to be equipped with the skills to rehearse and operate in an ensemble, hone their aural awareness, and utilise these ensemble skills when performing across all situations.
Performance opportunities for ensembles will be provided throughout the year, from intimate events in private homes to concerts in partnership with the National Gallery of Victoria, Scots' Church on Collins St, St Silas and many others.
CHAMBER MUSIC COMPETITION
Musicians will participate in the annual Chamber Music Competition. Ensembles selected for the Semi Finals will perform their complete chamber work in a public performance with three ensembles then being selected to perform in the Final at ANAM, broadcast live on 3MBS radio.
ENSEMBLE AND ORCHESTRAL PERFORMANCE
Musicians will perform in large ensemble and orchestral performances with ANAM Faculty and guest artists throughout the year. These will include concerts presented by ANAM and also in partnership with major performing organisations including Melbourne Recital Centre, as part of its Mostly Mozart series; and performances presented as ‘Side by Side’ projects with Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, Four Winds Festival, Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra and West Australian Symphony Orchestra. Orchestral performance skills will also be developed in section classes, through readings of orchestral repertoire, and audition training.
MUSICIAN ENHANCEMENT PROGRAM
ANAM presents a range of activities to accompany the performance training, these activities are considered essential to becoming well-rounded musicians.
Established by the late Richard Gill AO, the ANAM Choir is a regular activity within the ANAM program. This element of the Musician Enhancement Program spans the course of musical development by way of vocal tradition from the beginnings of Gregorian Chant, through early polyphony and beyond. ANAM Choir has a focus on aural training, the historical development of music, and a study of some of the seminal works in music history. In 2021 this training is directed by Graham Abbott.
MUSICIANS’ HEALTH AND PERFORMANCE SUPPORT
ANAM recognises the challenge of maintaining a healthy mind and body as a performer. The Program caters for specific instrumental issues, and with a broad spectrum of ideas regarding the physical and mental implications of being a professional musician in the 21st century. The Program aims to arm musicians with the tools to deal with the preparation and on-going care of a musicians’ mind and body, including how to manage pain and prevent or treat injury, and managing performance anxiety. Invited presenters include leading practitioners and specialists in their fields of physiology, audiology and psychology.
Providing a series of specialised lectures and instruction in a range of areas that are important to any career in the performing arts. Presented by acknowledged authorities in the field, including guest artists and industry professionals, musicians will discuss career options, and the skills required, for life after ANAM.
First year musicians will participate in an In-Schools program led by music educator Karen Kyriakou. Performing in ensembles each will develop a 30-minute interactive performance presented to children at primary and secondary schools.
