The ANAM Set 2024 - SEEKING EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST FROM AUSTRALIAN and NEW ZEALAND COMPOSERS
The Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) launched its commissioning project The ANAM Set in 2021. To date 67 works have been commissioned, composed, recorded and performed by ANAM musicians. The Australia Council has now provided funding to commission a further 24 Australian and New Zealand composers to each write a six-minute solo or duo work for, and in close partnership with, ANAM musicians in their final year of study.
Composers and musicians will begin collaborating in 2023 with each piece to receive its world premiere performance in the 2024 ANAM Recital Season at Abbotsford Convent.
This project will provide each ANAM musician with the experience of collaborating with a composer to produce a new work that compliments and enriches their musical strengths. Each work will be recorded and published through the Australian Music Centre.
ANAM is seeking Expressions of Interest (EOI) from Australian and New Zealand composers of diverse backgrounds and career trajectories, working across a range of art music styles. Composers do not need to be currently based in Australia or New Zealand.
ANAM believes that First Nations voices are essential in building a complete and diverse ANAM Set, and as such applications from Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander heritage are strongly encouraged to apply, and ANAM will work with established First Nations composers to identify potential candidates for this project.
Composers who have previously been commissioned through The ANAM Set project are ineligible to apply but are strongly encouraged to recommend potential composers to ANAM.
The ANAM Set 2024 has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body

“Participating in the ANAM Set has been one of the most rewarding adventures of my time at ANAM. I had enjoyed performing works written by Andrew Batterham in the past, so I felt very fortunate to be paired with him. Together we decided what we thought would make the most useful contribution to the Australian trumpet repertoire, and Andrew produced a work that is truly special. To collaborate with a composer is a real privilege, and to have a piece of Australian music I have such a personal connected to is a treasure I can carry with me for my career.”
Joel Walmsley trumpet (VIC), premiered A Black Dog Near Me for flugelhorn and piano by Andrew Batterham on 3 December, 2021, with Peter de Jager, piano.
“I am extremely grateful to ANAM for this opportunity to collaborate with Anne on a project so deeply personal to me. I feel like part of my heart and soul is in this piece, and that it will continue to be a most important part of my life, and of my musical career. The experience has given me invaluable insights into the process of composition, and has inspired me to think in new ways about the pieces I work on in preparation for performance.”
Clare Fox clarinet (NSW), premiered Ruby for solo clarinet by Anne Cawrse on 17 November, 2021.
“The ANAM Set is one of the most enabling and important projects in Australian music I am yet to see, and I am so grateful to be a part of it! As a young performer the process of collaborating with composers in the creation of new works can be the most exhilarating form of the creative process, and I am thrilled to build a new creative dialogue with a composer and discover how we can enlighten each other.”
Henry Justo viola (alum), premiered Mīmēsis for viola and electronics by Andrián Petout on 14 May, 2022.
