Previously based in Brisbane, Timothy (‘Tim’) Allen-Ankins recently graduated from a Bachelor of Music (2019) at the Queensland Conservatorium where he learnt from Peter Luff, Ysolt Clark and Malcolm Stewart. At this institution, he was inspired by the role of the French horn in orchestral repertoire. Tim is excited to commence his training in 2020 at the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) under the tutelage of Sydney Symphony’s Principal Horn, Ben Jacks.
Tim holds casual positions with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra and Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. He particularly enjoys the thrill of playing Principal Horn and has performed this role in the Australian Youth Orchestra (AYO), Queensland Youth Symphony (QYS), Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra, Queensland Pops Orchestra and the Queensland Music Festival. Tim has also performed in programs with the Australian International Symphony Orchestra Institute.
As a soloist, Tim has performed Mozart’s Horn Concerto no. 4 on a Queensland Youth Symphony tour and Schumann’s Konzertstück for four horns with the Northern Rivers Symphony Orchestra. In 2019, Tim performed in the Musica Viva Festival in a wind quintet through AYO’s Chamber Players program.
Some of Tim’s musical highlights include performing in the Royal Concertgetbouw in Amsterdam, Opéra Berlioz in Montpellier, the Sydney Opera House, and playing Principal Horn in Mahler’s Symphony nos. 1 and 8 as well as Strauss’ Alpine Symphony. He has had the privilege of working with established international conductors such as Johannes Fritzsch, Elim Chan, Larry Rachleff, Giordano Bellincampi, Bertrand de Billy and Krzysztof Urbański.
Outside of music making, Tim enjoys playing tennis and going to the gym in his spare time.
